Abstract
Two cases of liver cirrhosis of childs group "C" were presented, both of whose chief complaints were massive bleeding esophageal varices. Permanent portal systemic shunt were constructed by anastomosing the reopened umbilical vein to the saphenous vein (umbilicosaphenous shunt.) The portal pressures were measured by way of the umbilical vein and umbilical portography were also taken.
In both cases, decompression of the hypertensive pressure of the portal system was achieved with cessation of esophageal bleeding. The patency of the shunt was proved by venogram in 1 case. Further clinical experience will be necessary to determine the place of this procedure in the shunt surgery.
